Mental Health Is More Than Suicide.

I have mental illness, but I don’t want to kill myself.
Why is the general public so insensitive to my experience, but when someone commits suicide, all of a sudden it’s a massive outcry for mental health reform?
This is not a contest or a commentary on “not fair”…but it kind of is in the sense that my mental health matters and it shouldn’t involve taking my own life to get some attention, recognition and reform.

Too Young For Therapy?

I’m a parent with ADHD and BPD, which I acknowledge and fully embrace, and today, I’m taking my young child to psychotherapy for the first time.
It’s so weird.
I want her to learn how to manage it before she turns out like me. I would never want her to go through the difficulties that I did, so I am taking her in.

The drawing that I share in this piece was one of the most effective for me in terms of being able to communicate, not only to my family, but to my doctors, about how I was feeling when I’d get angry. It uses the visual of a floor pan to explain the different rooms of thought when it comes to dealing with an upsetting situation or idea.

Poking A Bear In The Public Library

In this case, mental illness was so clearly evident as, on one of the first warm days in the city, when everyone is wearing t-shirts and open-toed shoes, this man sported a heavy sweater and a winter hat. In addition, over his unkempt facial hair, he had a surgical mask pulled down to cover his bearded chin.
If there was ever a picture of “crazy” this was undeniably it.
