Mental Health Is More Than Suicide.

I have mental illness, but I don’t want to kill myself.
Why is the general public so insensitive to my experience, but when someone commits suicide, all of a sudden it’s a massive outcry for mental health reform?
This is not a contest or a commentary on “not fair”…but it kind of is in the sense that my mental health matters and it shouldn’t involve taking my own life to get some attention, recognition and reform.

Poking A Bear In The Public Library

In this case, mental illness was so clearly evident as, on one of the first warm days in the city, when everyone is wearing t-shirts and open-toed shoes, this man sported a heavy sweater and a winter hat. In addition, over his unkempt facial hair, he had a surgical mask pulled down to cover his bearded chin.
If there was ever a picture of “crazy” this was undeniably it.

MEDICATION IS THE NEW MENTAL ASYLUM

Instead of solving the problem, we are postponed and chemically-incarcerated for an indefinite period of time; medication is the new asylum.
Wait times for a new patient to see a psychiatrist are over a month; a long time in a depressed, mentally-ill person’s world, and a lot [of bad things] can happen during those weeks.
